Stock exchanges BSE and NSE continued the downward trend as trading resumed after a 45-minute halt. Around 01:30 pm, both Sensex and Nifty were trading down 11%. The trading had to be stopped trading for 45 minutes owing to Sensex hitting circuit breaker.

"Panic has gone up domestically because of the lockdown situation," said Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Financial Services, Reuters reported.  "There is fear that the situation will not be brought under control soon," Reuters Nair quoting Nair.

After a dramatic recovery of 1627 points on Friday, the Sensex once again started on a downward trajectory on Monday falling by over 7.7% in the opening trade. Meanwhile, the broader market Nifty also fell by 9% when the markets opened on Monday.

The Sensex was trading at 27608.16 around 9:20 am while the Nifty was trading at 7945.70 levels.

On Friday, the Sensex ended the day at 29,915.96 going up by 1627.73 points or 5.8% higher from the previous close while the Nifty closed at 8,745.45 gaining by 482.00.
