Last year, the Railway Recruitment Board had notified 62,907 Level 1 posts. The posts include gangman, cabinman, helpers, keyman, trackman and welders among others. Candidates who were eligible to apply for the post must have passed the secondary examination and should have a certificate from the National Council of Vocational Training or ITI, or have a National Apprenticeship Certificate.

Around 2 crore candidates applied for the posts out of which 82 lakhs were said to be engineering graduates and postgraduates in various subjects. A TOI report said that 4.91 lakh undergraduate engineers, 41,000 postgraduate engineers, and 86,000 management UG and PG candidates had applied for the posts.

However, the numbers may not indicate unemployment figures as people want to get into a government job for better pay and job security in India. It's also quite possible that many people who had applied for the posts already have a job.
