Flag Code of India, Republic Day 2023: India is celebrating its 74th Republic Day today. It was on January 26, 1949, when the Constitution was adopted by the Constituent Assembly and came into effect on January 2, 1950.  As we celebrate Republic Day 2023, there are a set of rules for hoisting the Tricolour in organisations/agencies, homes, offices and other places that we should follow. Let's check what is Flag Code of India is. 
 
Flag Code of India 2002 is an attempt to bring together all laws, conventions, practices and instructions for the guidance and benefit of all concerned in regard to the Flag of India.

Flag Code of India: What is the rule for hoisting the flag 

  • When hoisting the National Flag at home, citizens should stay consistent with the dignity and honour of the National Flag. Remember to keep a few following points in mind:
  •  Whenever the National Flag is displayed, it should occupy the position of honour and should be distinctly placed;
  • A damaged National Flag should not be displayed;
  •  The Flag should not be flown from a single masthead simultaneously with any other flag or flags;
  • The Flag should not be flown on any vehicle except in accordance with the provisions contained in Section IX of Part III of this Code.
  • When the Flag is displayed flat and horizontally on a wall, the saffron band should be uppermost and when displayed vertically, the saffron band shall be on the right with reference to the Flag (i.e. left to the person facing the Flag);
  • To the extent possible, the Flag should conform to the specifications prescribed in Part I of this Code.
  • No other flag or bunting should be placed higher than or above or side by side with the National Flag; nor should any object including flowers or garlands or emblem be placed on or above the Flag-mast from which the Flag is flown;
  • The Flag made of paper may be waived by the public on occasions of important national, cultural and sports

How to fold Tricolour, National Flag

  • The National Flag should be folded in a way that the Saffron and Green bands at the top. The bottom should be folded under the white band in the middle. 
  • The white band should be folded in such a way that only the Ashok Chakra is seen, along with parts of the saffron and green bands.
  • The Flag must be carried on the palms or arms to store it.
