Heavy rainfall alert: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in Odisha, Vidarbha and Konkan regions in Maharashtra, Goa and Gujarat on August 9 and 10. Due low pressure development in the Bay of Bengal, these two regions can receive very heavy rains and so a red alert warning has been issued, it said.

At present, Mumbai is witnessing heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds. In the second and third weeks of July, Marathwada and Vidarbha had witnessed heavy rains, which claimed several lives and damaged crops, a PTI report said on Monday.

The IMD said that widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorm are very likely over Telangana and ghat areas of Tamil Nadu on August 9; Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam on August 9 and 13. Besides, the coastal Karnataka will also experience heavy rainfall from August 9 to 11.

In Gujarat, according to the state Emergency Centre's data, in the last 24 hours as many as 153 talukas of 31 districts received a maximum of 99 mm of rain. Till date, the state has received 660 mm rains which is 77 per cent rainfall of the season. Valsad district's Kaprada taluka received 3115 mm till date -- 109 per cent of the season.

From 1992 to 2021, the average rainfall recorded in the taluka is 2846 mm.

People are advised to not to venture near beach areas, avoid staying close to vulnerable structure and check for traffic congestion before leaving for destination.
