Indian Railways is set to be achieve yet another massive feat under the Modi government as the country's first underwater train will soon be operational under Kolkata's famous Hooghly River. The work on country's first Metro rail line under the river has been going on for a while and is almost complete now. The development was confirmed by Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday. In a tweet, Goyal said that the service is expected to start soon and also shared a video on the upcoming Metro line which will feature this underwater train.

Goyal said that the new underwater train is an example of excellent engineering. He added that it is a symbol of the progress of the railways in the country. With this, Kolkata residents will feel comfortable, and the country will feel proud, he added. The train will be a part of the East-West corridor of Kolkata Metro and will pass through Hooghly river, becoming the first such river crossing in the country.

The video shared by Goyal talked about the engineering behind the construction of the tunnels needed for this train. It also revealed that the tunnels will be protected by "four protective covers and featured prime minister Narendra Modi in it. The train will be part of the Kolkata Metro Line 2, also known as the East-West Metro which was conceptualised in 1971.

The line will connect Howrah and Sealdah railway stations which are two of the busiest railway stations in the world. 

The 16-km line will be made operational in two phases - the first one connecting Salt Lake Sector 5 station to Salt Lake Stadium station. It is expected to cut the travel time significantly. This Metro line between Salt Lake Sector 5 to Salt Lake Stadium has Karunamayi, Central Park, City Center and Bengal Chemical Metro stations. 

A total of Rs 8,572 crore will be spent on this entire project.
