Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet state chief ministers over the next two days and to review strategies to tackle covid and to decide on extent of economic activity to be allowed in future. India went on a nationwide lockdown in March, which was further extended in phases, before the government decided to give relaxations.

On Tuesday, PM Modi will meet the chief ministers and top officials of 21 states and Union territories, which account for only 5% of total cases in India. The second meeting will be with the chief ministers of that not only account for the most covid-positive cases but have also been hit by the exodus of daily wage workers.

The meeting on Tuesday will be attended by representatives of six Union territories, North Eastern states and Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, among others. The worst affected of these states are Assam, which has a total of 4,000 total cases, Punjab with over 3,000 cases, and Kerala with over 2,400 cases.

During the meet, chief ministers are expected to decide on their strategies to continue economic activity along with strict lockdown measures in red zones and containment zones.

The country has witnessed a sharp jump in number of deaths with 380 people losing their lives in last 24 hours. The causalities from the coronavirus pandemic rose to 9,900. Maharashtra reported a record number of deaths on Monday. However, there was a slight dip in the number of cases. As many as 10,667 new cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours. The total number of coronavirus patients in the country increased to 343,091. 

Tamil Nadu and Delhi registered a drop in the fresh cases on Monday. There were 153,178 active coronavirus patients in India. Over 50 per cent of the total cases have recovered.
