Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday released a new stamp and coin to commemorate the Paika Rebellion (Paika Bidroha), which was fought against British rule in Odisha in 1817. PM Modi also inaugurated the new campus of IIT-Bhubaneswar.  This new campus has been built at a cost of around Rs 1,660 crore. Apart from this, PM Modi also inaugurated a new ESIC Hospital at Bhubaneswar and laid foundation stone for infrastructure and other projects worth over Rs 14,523 crore for the state.

He said that his government aims to develop eastern India as the gateway to South-East Asia.  The Prime Minister said that IIT-Bhubaneswar would spur the industrial development of Odisha, and work towards technology to improve the lives of the people. He added that the government has plans to expand the healthcare infrastructure, road network, and oil and gas pipeline infrastructure in the state. 

He reiterated the Union Government is committed towards the all-round development of Odisha. He also announced setting up of a Chair on the Paika Rebellion at Utkal University in Bhubaneswar. Besides that, the Prime Minister inaugurated the Lalitgiri Museum, which is a famous Buddhist centre of archaeological importance, comprising Stupa, Viharas (monasteries) and images of Lord Buddha.

The year marks the 200th anniversary of the 1817 Rebellion led by Buxi Jagabandhu of Khorda district against the British.
