In a bid to promote livelihood opportunities in rural India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the Rs 50,000 crore Garib Kalyan Rojgar Abhiyaan (GKRA) today from Khagaria, Bihar. The campaign will create durable infrastructure along with boosting employment opportunities. Whole launching the GKRA, PM Modi said that it will be a focused campaign of 125 days across 116 districts in 6 states — UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh — to work in mission mode and thereby help migrant workers.

While launching Rs 50,000 crore Garib Kalyan Rojgar Abhiyaan Prime Minister talked to the local people of Khagadia about their experiences during the lockdown. During the discussion with the local Gram Sarpanch, PM Modi lauded him for arranging the quarantine center of around 475 migrants, which is huge when it comes to a village. He also talked with the people who have migrated to Khagaria from various parts of India and advised them to take advantage of this Rs 50,000 crore campaign.

Speaking on the occasion Bihar CM Nitish Kumar said that out of 38 districts in the state, 32 districts have been chosen for this Rs 50,000 crore job oriented campaign and he expected that it will help migrant labourers to get job opportunities at home. However, he urged the Prime Minister to provide relief in GST and Income Tax that he has been asking from the Centre on various platforms.

This campaign of 125 days, which will work in mission mode, will involve intensified and focused implementation of 25 different types of works to provide employment to the migrant workers on one hand and create infrastructure in the rural regions of the country on the other hand.

A total of 116 Districts with more than 25,000 returnee migrant workers across six States, namely Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand and Odisha have been chosen for the campaign which includes 27 Aspirational Districts. These districts are estimated to cover about 2/3rd of such migrant workers.

The Abhiyaan will be a coordinated effort between 12 different Ministries/Departments, namely, Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, Road Transport & Highways, Mines, Drinking Water & Sanitation, Environment, Railways, Petroleum & Natural Gas, New & Renewable Energy, Border Roads, Telecom and Agriculture.
