Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday extended the ongoing coronavirus lockdown till May 3. In his address, PM Modi said that the challenge was to stop the virus from spreading to new parts of the country. "Till May 3, every Indian will have to stay in lockdown. I request all Indians that we stop the coronavirus from spreading to other areas," he said. Modi spoke as the number of people infected with coronavirus reached 10,363, according to government data on Tuesday, of whom 339 have died.

Lockdown 2.0 to be more strict

Prime Minister Narendra Modi admitted that strict actions are required to control the spread of virus despite the efforts of people. He said that local bodies will take stock of situation and ensure that lockdown is followed strictly. He added that government will also come out with extensive guidelines tomorrow. 

India reacted early

PM Modi said that India’s reaction to coronavirus has been better than most countries. He said that the number of cases in several countries were at par with India a month back. By now, these countries have reported a 25 per cent to 30 per cent increase in cases. PM Modi lauded the sacrifices made by people during the period.

Major economic impact

The Prime Minister also admitted that the economy has taken a hit as most people remain indoors. However, he added that no price can be set on the lives of people. 

“If we look at it from an economic angle, it (lockdown) might look an expensive decision. We have paid a heavy price for it but the lives of Indians can never be valued. The path we have followed is being discussed internationally. Governments in various states, health departments in states have worked with a lot of responsibility,” he said.

No need to panic

The Prime Minister once again emphasised that there is no need to panic as medicines and ration are in appropriate supply in India. 

Social distancing only measure

PM Modi said that he has held meetings with state governments and most of them have suggested that lockdown should be extended. He said that even people want the same. 

“Despite so many efforts, the spread of coronavirus continues to be a major challenge for governments across the world. We have held discussions with all the state governments to decide how to continue the fight, Most states have recommended that we should extend the lockdown. Keeping in mind all the suggestions, we have decided to extend the lockdown to May 3,” he said.
