A number of currency notes have been released into the financial system since demonetisation including Rs 2000, Rs 500, and Rs 200. Now, it is time for a coin. A coin new is coming to the markets near you very soon! On the occasion of Statistics Day and the 125th birth anniversary of P C Mahalanobis on Friday, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu is all set to release into circulation a coin of Rs 5 denomination. Another coin that will also be released is Rs 125. However, this higher denomination currency will be a commemorative coin. Naidu will unveil the coins as a mark of respect to the statistical genius Mahalanobis.

June 29 has been designated as the Statistics Day by the government in 2007. This falls under the category of special days be celebrated every year at the national level. 

According to a report by PTI, the attempt is to create public awareness about the importance of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation and to acknowledge the contribution of Mahalanobis. The theme for Statistics Day this year is 'Quality Assurance in Official Statistics '.

On June 29, Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation and Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) will conduct an event at Kolkata to celebrate Statistics Day, a ministry statement said. ISI was set up by Mahalanobis in 1931.
