National Statistics Day 2021 Theme: We know that 14th February is Valentine's Day, 1st April is April Fool's Day,  but how many of us are aware of the fact there is a Statistics Day too? Well, National Statistics Day is celebrated on 29th July every year to pay respect to late Prof Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis. The government of India has been celebrating 29th July as Statistics Day on the birth anniversary of the late professor. This day has been designated as one of the special days to be celebrated at the national level.

Prof Mahalanobis is credited for his invaluable contribution in establishing the National Statistical System. He also founded the Indian Statistical Institute. According to an ANI report, this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the main event of Statistics Day is being organised through video conferencing / web casting at NITI Aayog, New Delhi.

This year the theme of Statistics Day is Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) - 2 (End Hunger, Achieve Food Security and Improved Nutrition and Promote Sustainable Agriculture). As per the official release from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), every year, one particular theme of current national importance is chosen as the focused area for discussion.

This year the Chief Guest of the event is Rao Inderjit Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of MoSPI and Ministry of Planning. Prof Bimal Kumar Roy, National Statistical Commission (NSC), Dr G P Samanta, Chief Statistician of India and Secretary, MoSPI, Prof Sanghamitra Bandyapadhyay, Director, Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Pietro Gennari, Chief Statistician, Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, Renata Lok-Dessallien, UN, Resident Coordinator are also scheduled to address the participants on the occasion of Statistics Day.

According to the ANI report, on this occasion, MoSPI also recognises the contribution for outstanding high-quality research work in the field of applied and theoretical statistics benefitting the official statistical system. The winners of Prof P C Mahalanobis National Award in Official Statistics, 2021 and Prof C R Rao National Award for Young Statistician, 2021 will be announced during the event.
