Maharashtras wholesale market to go on indefinite strike from July 11

In an attempt to protest against government's recent amendments to the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) Act, traders and commission agents will go on an indefinite strike on Monday, a leading daily reported. 

Despite the state government’s assurance of creating parallel marketing options, supply of fruits and vegetables will be affected in almost all cities as the APMCs control more than 80% of the trade, The Indian Express reported on Sunday. 

The state government had recently delisted fruits and vegetables from the APMC, it said. 

The official notification had also put the onus of recovery of commission from the buyers instead of the present practice of deducting it from the final bill of the farmers.

Commission is a rate fixed by the APMCs which is paid to the commission agents by the farmers for selling their ware. 

After the recent amendments, the commission amount will be paid by the end buyer to the commission agent or trader in the market yard, the news report stated.
