Lunar eclipse 2021: As we enter the year 2021, skywatchers must be waiting eagerly to witness first lunar eclipse of the year. Lunar eclipse is a phenomenon which occurs when Earth's shadow blocks the sun's light, which otherwise reflects off the moon. As per almanac and astrological calculations, the year 2021 will witness two lunar eclipses. First lunar eclipse 2021 is considered important and will be seen on May 26.

There is also strong desire among the people to know how lunar eclipse will impact the country. As per astrological calculations, this year first lunar eclipse will be ‘total’ in nature, however, it will be considered as shadow eclipse in India. In a good news for Indian skygazers, this eclipse will be visible in India, however, this will not be seen in some parts of the country. Another lunar eclipse of 2021 will be witnessed on November 19. The first lunar eclipse of 2021 will be also visible in South Asia, East Asia, Australia, much of North America, South America, Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, and Antarctica.

There is great relevance of ‘sootak’ period during lunar eclipse. It is said no auspicious or important work should be initiated during this period. There is also a tradition of following certain rules during ‘sootak’ period. However, Sootak period will not be considered during the first lunar eclipse of 2021 as it will be a shadow eclipse and not total eclipse. During shadow lunar eclipse, sootak period is not acceptable.  

Despite shadow lunar eclipse, it is advisable for women and small children to pay caution during this period. Stepping out of the house or eating during the eclipse is considered inauspicious. It is said that negative energy emitting out of the moon affects the people who come in its contact.  

One should take bath and clean temple area once the eclipse is over and later pray and sprinkle holy (Ganga) water around their house.
