They were the first humans to scale the height of Mount Everest. In 2008, Nepal decided to observe the day as International Everest Day after Sir Edmund Hillary died. Hillary and Norgay become the first humans to reach the summit of Mount Everest, which lies at 29,035 feet above the sea on May 29, 1953, at 11:30 AM. It is the highest point on Earth and the highest peaks of the Great Himalayas in Asia. Everest lies on the border between Nepal and Tibet. It is located in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas. Also, the international border between Nepal and China runs across its summit point.

The Mount Everest Day celebration has been a special event for the promotion of Nepal's mountain tourism. Mostly the participants include ministers, climbers, tourism entrepreneurs, and government officials. However, in this COVID-19 pandemic, it is expected that the celebrations of this day are likely to be low-key.
