In its ongoing infrastructure upgradation, gauge conversion and expansion move, Indian Railways has added one more thing and that is to launch a new weekly train from Agartala to Deoghar in Jharkhand. The new weekly train will be flagged off on July 6 by Railways Minister Piyush Goyal, said a Northeast Frontier Railway spokesman.

The Indian Railways statement yesterday stated that the train will be flagged off from Agartala on July 6, but its regular service will commence from July 14.

The launching of such a train service was one of BJP's pre-election assurances to the people in Agartala, to facilitate thousands of devotees of Anukul Thakur to visit their holy place at Deoghar in Jharkhand.

The Agartala-Deoghar Express train will cover a distance of 1,473 km in 39 hours, the statement said.

The Railways' expansion programme is making effort to connect the north-eastern region with other parts of the country.

Currently, Indian Railways operations are divided into 17 zones, which are further sub-divided into divisions, each having a divisional headquarters. There is a total of 73 divisions at present. In 2002-2003, seven new zones and eight new divisions were created and the Salem division was added in 2007.
