Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday flagged off the 12,000 HP electric locomotive engine of the Indian Railways from the Madhepura loco factory in Bihar. The flagged off loco is the country's first 12,000 horsepower (HP) electric locomotive. Till now, the most powerful electric engine in Indian Railways was of 6,000 HP.  With this launch, India also entered the elite list of countries like Russia, China, Germany and Sweden that runs rail engines with 12,000 HP or more power.  Equipped with an insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT)-based propulsion technology, the 12,000 HP locomotives is compliant with Indian standards of freight transport. The electric locomotive will have a maximum speed of 110 km per hour. This will be the first of 40 locomotives expected to roll out of the factory by the end of March 2020.

On the occasion, the Prime Minister also inaugurated the Madhepura Greenfield Electric Locomotive Factory. The factory is a high-value FDI joint venture with French rolling stock giant Alstom. The Rs 20,000 crore project is expected to roll out a total of 800 high horsepower locos over a period of 11 years.

Besides, the Indian Railways 12,000 HP Electric Locomotive engine and Madhepura Greenfield Electric Locomotive Factory, the Prime Minister also inaugurated several other projects like doubling of Muzaffarpur-Suagauli-Valmikinagar rail section and Motihari-Amlekhganj Oil Pipeline Project, and new Chamaparan Humsafar express train between Katihar and Old Delhi Junction.

Prime Minister also felicitated and conferred awards to 10 swacchagrahis on the occasion. 

He also dedicated and laid the foundation for development projects of Rs worth 6600 crores. 

He also laid the foundation stone of four new sewerage projects including Saidpur sewerage network and Pahari Sewerage Zone 4 and Zone 5 among others.  

The 12,000 HP electric locomotive, as well as other projects, were inaugurated during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Bihar. Modi visited Bihar to participate in the concluding ceremony of Centenary of Mahatma Gandhi’s Champaran Satyagraha at Motihari, Bihar. During the ceremony, PM Modi said cleanliness movement will succeed only if it becomes the part of everyone's life. He said India is changing and it is visible in its habits and behaviour. ​

Addressing the 20,000 ambassadors of Cleanliness known as Swachhagrahis, Modi said the cleanliness ambassadors have shown the same spirit as it was manifested during Mahatma Gandhi led satyagraha. 

He said cleanliness has socially and economically empowered people. Prime Minister said history has been repeated as thousands of swacchagrahis had gathered at cleanliness conference. Mr Modi said since April 4 under Satyagraha se Swacchagraha campaign 26 lakh toilets have been constructed in Bihar, UP, Odisha & Jammu& Kashmir.
