Now, Indian Railways passengers can relax about the quality of food that the transporter offers. Indian Railways has started printing bar-codes on the food packets with details of the kitchen unit name and date of packaging to tackle all quality issues with food that customers have complained about. The measures by Railways are already initiated in some place which will be taken across the country.

Railways is roping in branded food providers for the e-catering services on trains, locating food safety supervisors in kitchen units to monitor food safety and hygiene practices, and planning for random inspections by railway officials and food safety officers to check the food preparing practices, IANS quoted Railway Minister Piyush Goyal as saying in Lok Sabha.

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC) also upgraded 46 kitchen units in the last two years, and 38 base kitchens has been installed  by CCTV cameras for monitoring the food preparation. Railways will extend web-based live streaming facilities to these kitchens.

Also, IRCTC offers menu options to upgrade the quality of meals to be served to passengers, he added.

Minister said that the Railways has not set up any committee to conduct an inquiry regarding food quality. However, third party audits are conducted by IRCTC to check the quality of food on trains.

The new measures have been brought up  by Railway Ministry after facing complaints against poor quality of food to acknowledge the complaints by passengers. A 'New Catering Policy 2017', was already issues by government in order to improve the catering services, and provide safe, healthy and quality food to passengers.
