Padmashree awardee Sreedharan in an interview with Hindustan Times said, “Bullet trains will cater only to the elite community. It is highly expensive and beyond the reach of the ordinary people. What India needs is a modern, clean, safe and fast rail system.”

Sreedharan is a Padma Shree awardee and he took over the responsibility of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in 1997. He also contributed in the development of Konkan railway and also India’s first Metro rail project in Kolkata.

Accidents have been one of the major concerns and people in suburban areas are quite unsafe in the current system, he indicated.

“Accident record has not improved. Many also die on tracks, at level crossing, in suburban sections. Almost 20,000 lives are lost on tracks yearly. I feel Indian Railways is 20 years behind those of advanced nations.” He said.

To lay down indigenous technical standards for the metro rail system in the country, Sreedharan is going to head a high level committee.

I am very confident very soon we will and I am very confident that very soon we will resolve it. We are trying our best to complete the work by 2022 before its deadline, 2023."

"The Indian Railways is working day and night to complete the much-awaited Bullet train project by 2022," he added.
