The key Indian equity market indices opened flat on Thursday taking a cue from global markets.

The sensitive index (Sensex) of the BSE, which had closed at 26,713.93 points on Wednesday, opened at 26,694.28 points, some minutes after, it was trading at 26720.26 points with a gain of 6.33 points.

At the National Stock Exchange, the 51-scrip Nifty opened at 8,176.70 points against the earlier close at 8179.95 points. This index, some minutes later, was ruling at 8,183.10 with a gain of 3.15 points.

Asian indices Nikkei, Hang Seng and Shanghai were in red by 2.29 percent, 0.05 percent and 0.07 percent, respectively, in the morning trade. 

The US markets closed higher on Wednesday, as investors cheered on the positive aspects of the US economy. 

"Oil prices were steady on Thursday on mixed market signals ahead of an OPEC meeting in Viennaa. Attention will be on the water level in major reservoirs. IMD data on rainfall is also awaited," said IIFL in its opening bell report.
