The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) figured amongst the top 30 institutes in emerging economies at the Times Higher Education (THE) Rankings 2018. IIT-B bagged the 26th overall position, but ranked second amongst Indian institutions.

Indian Institute of Science (IISC) Bangalore secured the top spot in the country and the 13th position amongst emerging economies. Savtribai Phule Pune University sat at position 180. The University of Mumbai failed to feature in the list yet again.

India was the second most represented nation after China, with 42 institutes making it to the list of top 350 institutes from four continents. In 2017, only 27 institutes were on the list.

The performance indicators used for the rankings were grouped into five areas: Teaching (the learning environment); Research (volume, income and reputation); citations (research influence); International outlook (staff, students and research); and industry income (knowledge transfer). IIT B scored the best in Industry income (53.4) followed by Teaching (43.1).
