Indian Railways today inaugurated the new suburban corridor linking Nerul and Belapur in Navi Mumbai with Kharpokar in Ulwe. Ulwe is a node of Navi Mumbai located at the edge of Panvel city and developed and maintained by CIDCO. The newly-developed city falls in Raigad district.

The first phase of the railway line was flagged off by Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The 12-km stretch, which has been commissioned, is the first phase of the 27km Nerul-Belapur-Uran corridor.Total cost of the project is Rs 1782 crore and the phase 2 will be completed by December 2019.

This new line will help accelerate the growth of Navi Mumbai, as it wull provide direct access between Uran town, Jawaharlal Nehru Port, and the Newly-developed areas of Mumbai.

"Better Connectivity for Mumbai: Inaugurated the 1st phase of the Nerul Seawood-Uran-Belapur Railway project and flagged off its 1st train with Maharashtra CM @Dev_Fadnavis from Kharkopar Station, which will provide enhanced connectivity to Mumbai from nearby towns & suburbs," Goyal tweeted.

"Despite its importance & immense traffic, Mumbai's Railways were neglected prior to 2014. The new Nerul-Uran-Belapur corridor will ease the burden on the network & provide better connectivity for those that travel to Mumbai for work from nearby towns. #TransformingMumbaiLocal," the Union minister said.

This project will bring about improved connectivity within Navi Mumbai and with Mumbai, a major boost to the projects along these nodes, said Devendra Fadnavis. 

It will also  accelerate growth in and around Navi Mumbai and will ensure better connectivity with  JN Port, he added.

We are also investing Rs 1 lakh crore in various metro projects to integrate suburban networks, Fadnavis said.
