This new infection occurs in the sinus and targets coronavirus patients or people who have recovered from Covid 19.

As per The Indian Express report, SSG Hospital, Vadodara, has reported 8 cases of this new fungal infection. These patients were admitted last week. "Pulmonary aspergillosis is usually seen in immuno-compromised patients, but aspergillosis of the sinus is rare. This disease is now seen in those patients who have been cured of Covid or are undergoing treatment. However, aspergillosis is not as dangerous as black fungus (mucormycosis)," Dr Sheetal Mistry, Consultant of Covid-19 for city and district administration, told The Indian Express,

Doctors are of the view that increased number of fungal infections are due to use of steroids to treat patients and use of non-sterile water to hydrate oxygen supply.

"Fungal infections are opportunistic in nature and feed on glucose. Therefore, patients with a history of diabetes, who have undergone a rigorous course of steroids to treat Covid-19 as well as those who have turned diabetic following Covid-19 infection are at risk of developing the fungal infection," added Mistry.

Meanwhile, as the state started witnessing decline in coronavirus cases, the state government has decided to give a concession of up to one hour in night curfew in 36 cities. This was announced by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Wednesday. The Chief Minister said that the ban on movement of people will remain in force from 9 am to 6 am in 36 cities from Friday. Currently, the night curfew is in force from 8 pm in the evening to 6 pm in the morning
