The government's procurement of oilseeds and wheat for the Rabi season 2020-21 is in full flow. It has procured over 2.61 lakh MT of pulses and 3.17 MT of oilseeds under the Rabi 2020-21 season till 2 May 2020 according to a government release. The government has procured it at the MSP value of Rs 2682 cr benefiting more than 325565 farmers, the release further said.

The agriculture ministry under the Narendra Modi government has been taking various steps to facilitate farmers and farming activities at field level during the lockdown period in the wake of Covid 19 pandemic. Under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) Scheme during the lockdown period. Over 9 cr farmer families have been benefited and an amount of Rs 18,134 cr has been released so far.

Out of this, a quantity of 14859 MT of pulses and 6706 MT of oilseeds was procured on 1-2 May 2020 in six states viz Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.

The government has also purchased over 1.81 cr MT of wheat out of 1.87 cr that arrived in FCI (Food Corporation of India) in the Rabi Marketing Season 2020-21, the release further said.

There has been a "significant" rise in the Sowing Area Coverage of summer crops, the government release said.  

For rice the sowing area coverage was about 34.80 lakh ha under summer rice as compared to 25.26 lakh ha during the corresponding period of last year. For pulses the sowing area coverage  was about 8.77 lakh ha as compared to 5.44 lakh ha during the corresponding period of last year.

For course cereals the sowing area coverage was about 9.12 lakh ha as compared to 5.49 lakh ha during the corresponding period of last year. And for oilseeds, the sowing area coverage was about 8.87 lakh ha as compared to 7 lakh ha during the corresponding period of last year.
