Mumbai: Amid the rising cases of Covid-19, the Union Cabinet on Tuesday decided to vaccinate everybody above 45 years of age post April 1. Until now the central government had allowed everyone above 60 years to get vaccinated.

In press briefing on cabinet decisions, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said, "It has been decided that from 1st April, the vaccine will open for all above 45 years of age. We request that all eligible should immediately register and get vaccinated."

He added, getting vaccinated is the basic shield against the coronavirus and he also clarified that there is no scarcity in the production and availability of the vaccine as well as the supply line/ chain is intact. He urged everyone to be part of this drive.

Currently, Covishield is manufactured by Serum Institute of India and Covaxin by Bharat Biotech.

India is going through the second wave of covid pandemic. In just the last 24 hours, over 40,000 people have been infected with half of the cases coming from Maharashtra alone.

India has become the world leader in supply and indigenously manufacture the vaccine against the corona virus. It has so far vaccinated over 5 crore people and has also sent it to over dozens of foreign countries. In addition, the country has also received high praise from World Health Organisation for leading the vaccination drive at domestic and global level.
