Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address to the nation on Monday, June 7 announced the extension of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana till Diwali.

The Prime Minister further said that under the scheme 80 crore poor will be provided free ration.

"Today the government has decided that the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana will now be extended till Diwali. In this time of the pandemic, the government is standing by the poor with every need, as their partner," PMO tweeted in Hindi.

The tweet further read that "That is, by November, free food grains will be available in fixed quantity every month to more than 80 crore countrymen."

 

People can know that the government of India had announced the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) in March 2020, during the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

It is a food security welfare scheme and is operated by the Department of Food and Public Distribution under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.

The scheme aims to feed the poorest citizens of the nation by providing grain through the Public Distribution System, to all the priority households.
