Media mogul Dr Subhash Chandra won the Rajya Sabha seat from Haryana on Saturday.

The Essel Group Chairman had contested as an independent candidate from the state and was backed by the BJP for the Rajya Sabha polls.

Dr Chandra has been a pioneer in the entertainment industry, launching India's first satellite television channel Zee TV in 1992 and later the first private news channel Zee News. He is involved in several philanthropist activities.

Among the 27 Rajya Sabha seats up for election, a keen contest was on the cards in Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Haryana.

While 30 of the total 57 seats in the current round of biennial elections to the Upper House already been decided without a contest, the fate of candidates for the remaining 27 seats was decided on Saturday evening.
