Earthquake Today: A mild earthquake of 4.1 magnitude jolted the Bankura district of West Bengal today. An IMD official there informed about the tremors. The earthquake took place at around 11.24 AM and the depth of this quake was 15 kms from the earth's surface. No report of any kind of casualty or damage to property has been reported, the IMD official's report says.

Informing about the earthquake in Bankura district of West Bengal the IMD official said, "The quake at 11.24 am took place at a depth of 15 km from the earth's surface at latitude 23.5 of degree north and longitude 87.1 degree east.The quake lasted for two seconds."

People in Bankura district town, about 200 km from Kolkata, experienced shaking of the earth surface and came out of their houses and other buildings. There was no report of any casualty or damage to property, as per initial reports, officials said.

West Bengal's Bankura district falls in the seismic zone that affects Sikkim to a larger extent. Entire Sikkim state is prone to erthquake. As per the PTI news agency reports, first earthquake hit East Sikkim district at 1.33 AM and the other one was recorded in West Bengal’s Bankura district at 11.24 AM, the IMD official said. The tremor in East Sikkim was of 3.2 magnitude and it occurred at a depth of 5 km from ground level, the IMD official further said.
