After the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted dust storm, rain and thunder in Delhi and NCR, the capital was hit by a powerful thunderstorm with wind speeds of 50-70 kmph on Monday night. This caused several flights to be delayed in Delhi. Power was cut and trees uprooted in several areas across the city. With more warnings of weather conditions deteriorating in the evening, the same may get repeated as far as flights and power cuts are concerned.

The Delhi traffic police has already issued a traffic advisory for people travelling in Delhi and NCR. A severe dust storm has claimed over 130 lives and several were injured in Northern part of India. 

Haryana Government has already ordered all private and government schools closed for two days (7 and 8th May).  Schools in Haridwar, Ghaziabad and Meerut are to remain shut today.

As precautionary measures,  Delhi government has ordered all afternoon schools to remain closed today. In every district of Delhi, search and rescue teams have been put on standby. The Delhi police have asked people not to venture out without checking storm warnings.

While running trains, the Delhi Metro has decided to exercise extreme caution. "If the wind speed is reported to be above 90 km per hour, trains will be put on hold at platforms. No train will enter platforms with a speed of more than 15 kmph," a metro official told PTI.

According to media reports, Rajasthan continues to reel under severe dust storm and heatwave conditions. On Monday, Bikaner, Jaisalmer and Barmer recorded maximums of 41.2, 41 and 40.7 degrees respectively. A dust storm occurred in Sriganganagar disrupting normal life in the area.

The Meteorological Department has issued dust storm warning with light rains in Alwar, Bundi, Chittorgarh, Dausa, Dholpur and Jaipur. IMD has predicted more dust storms and thundershower in North India today.
