The government has urged citizens to stay at home while celebrating the new year on December 31 and January 1 and avoid crowding in public places, especially on seashores, in gardens and on roads.

Over the past few months, the government has eased several lockdown restrictions.

Last month, the government had allowed the reopening of places of worship. Schools for students from Std 9th to 12th were also reopened in some parts of the state.

Maharashtra is among the five states and Union Territories that account for 60% of total active coronavirus cases in the country.

The Maharashtra government had earlier imposed a night curfew in all the municipal areas of the state. The curfew is in place from 11 pm to 6 am and will remain in force till 5 January.
