The death toll climbed to 5,23,753 with 60 new fatalities, according to the data updated at 8 am.

According to the ministry, 0.04 per cent of the total infections are active, while the recovery rate for COVID-19 is 98.74 per cent. There has been an increase of 821 cases in the active COVID-19 caseload in the past 24 hours.

On August 7, 2020, India's COVID-19 tally crossed the 20-lakh mark, and on August 23, it crossed 30 lakh; on September 5, it crossed 40 lakh, and on September 16, it crossed 50 lakh. After passing 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassing one crore on December 19, it crossed the one-crore barrier on December 19.

Last year, the country reached the grim milestone of two crores on May 4 and three crores on June 23.
