The total number of confirmed cases of novel coronavirus in India mounted to 11,439 stated the data published by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Wednesday. Of these, 9,756 are active cases of COVID-19, 1,305 individuals have recovered and discharged from the hospital, one person migrated to another country and 377 people succumbed to the disease.

Maharashtra remained the worst hit state with a total number of positive cases rising to 2,687, followed by New Delhi with 1,561 cases and Tamil Nadu, which has reported 1,204 cases, according to the Health Ministry data.

UP coronavirus cases surge to 657; 10 deaths

A sudden surge in the number of Corona patients has been witnessed in Uttar Pradesh, taking the tally of Corona positive cases to 657 in the state. Sixty-four new cases of Corona patients testing positive were registered on Tuesday while the death toll by Tuesday night, went up to ten.

Among the new total Corona cases in the state 40 are linked to the Tablighi Jamaat, officials said.

Deaths were reported from Kanpur (one), two in Agra, one each in Moradabad and Sambhal.

Five deaths that had earlier taken place had been reported from Basti, Meerut, Agra, Varanasi and Bulandshahr.

Spitting banned at public places in Himachal

To prevent COVID-19 transmission, the state government has prohibited spitting at public places in Himachal Pradesh, an official said on Wednesday.

Earlier, the state has banned the sale and use of chewing gums till June 30.

A statewide ban was imposed to check the possibility of transmission through spitting, Additional Chief Secretary (Health) R.D. Dhiman said.

Those found spitting will be booked under the Epidemic Disease Act and sections of Indian Penal Code.

Out of a total of 1,311 samples tested for COVID-19 so far, 33 have been positive, an official said. At present, the state has 16 active cases.

Besides, 3,765 have completed the mandatory 28-day isolation period.
