Charanjit Singh Channi is the new Punjab Chief Minister. The announcement was made by Harish Rawat, former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand and now General Secretary of the Indian National Congress (INC).

Hw was selected ahead of Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa whose name was ding the rounds for the top post as per an IANS report.

A meeting was ongoing on this at Rahul Gandhi`s Delhi residence to decide the next chief minister of Punjab, this report said.

He is likely to meet the Governor later in the day.

Earlier, Ambika Soni declined to become the chief minister in favour of a Sikh name.

The Congress has been holding several meets since Saturday after Captain Amarinder Singh resigned as the chief minister of Punjab.
