In her Budget speech on Saturday afternoon, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman used few verses in Kashmiri to describe India as Shalimar Garden. She said that the country is like a Shalimar garden, it is like a lotus on Dal Lake, like the warm blood of our youth and it is our best country in the world. She added that India is now the fifth-biggest economy in the world.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman started her speech by saying that this budget is to boost income and enhance purchasing power. She said that fundamentals of the economy are strong and inflation has been well contained, while banks cleaned up accumulated loans.

The finance minister further said during 2014-19, the government brought a paradigm shift in governance. She termed GST as a historic structural reform, saying it integrated the country economically.

The finance minister said GST has resulted in gains of Rs 1 lakh crore to consumers and removed inspector raj and also helped the transport sector. "Average household now saves 4 per cent in monthly expense after the rollout of GST," Sitharaman said, and added that the Budget for 2020-21 aims to fulfil aspirations of people.
