The markets on Thursday opened in negative territory shedding yesterday's gains. Both the 30-share BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 were down by over 1.5 per cent from the previous close, when the markets opened today. While the Sensex opened at 31,466.33 the broader market Nifty 50 today opened around 9,201.40. Most stocks opened in the red.

At the time of opening only Nestle India and ITC were trading in green on the Sensex while the remaining stocks were in red. Within 15 minutes of the trade Bajaj Finance, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Sun Pharmaceuticals followed suit. The top losers on Sensex were Infosys, Mahindra & Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki, HDFC Bank and Hero MotoCorp.  

Meanwhile, on the broader Nifty 50 index the top gainers at the time of opening were Cipla, Nestle and Dr Reddy's. Top loser on Nifty-50 were Infosys, Tata Motors, Hindalco Industries, Maruti Suzuki and Mahindra & Mahindra.

Today, the rupee was trading weaker from Wednesday close at Rs 75.5300 per USD at around 9:36 am. On Wednesday the rupee ended at 75.4500.

Meanwhile among the global peers, Asia`s stock markets fell and gold hit a one-week high on Thursday as worries about a second wave of coronavirus infections and a dour assessment of the way back from the head of the U.S. Federal Reserve dashed hopes for a quick recovery. MSCI`s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan fell 1 per cent, while Japan`s Nikkei fell about 0.7 percent. US stock futures fell 0.2 per cent, after the S&P 500 index`s worst two-day drop in nearly a month. Benchmark indexes in Australia, Hong Kong, Korea and China all fell about 1 per cent.

The markets on Wednesday had ended the day in green, giving up some early gains of the opening session. Both the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty ended the day up almost 2 per cent. While the 30-share BSE Sensex closed at 32,008.61 or over 637 points higher, the broader market Nifty-50 closed at 9,383.55 or over 187 points upwards.
