The central government approved the 10% reservation for the economically backward upper castes in jobs and education early this year. Later, this also got the approval of both houses of the Parliament.

The Bihar Legislative Assembly had passed the Bill providing 10% reservation for the economically weaker section in the General category in February this year. Before Bihar,  Maharashtra Cabinet approved the 10% reservation rules for the General category poor in government jobs and educational institutions across the state on February 4.

Other states where the new reservation rule has been implemented include Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Assam, etc.

The 10% reservation for the General Category poor is over and above the existing 50 per cent reservation for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and the Other Backward Classes.
