Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday addressed the nation and made a big announcement in view of Covid-19 pandemic. Addressing the nation, PM Narendra Modi announced that PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana under PRADHAN MANTRI GARIB KALYAN PACKAGE has been extended till November 2020.

"Rs 90,000 crore to be spent more on providing free ration to poor for five more months," PM Modi said while making the big announcement. 80 crore individuals, i.e, roughly two-thirds of India’s population would be covered under  PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana.

The  PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana was scheduled to end today i.e. June 30. 

Earlier, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had announced the distribution of 5 kg of wheat or rice and one kg of preferred pulses free-of-cost every month over the next three months to 80 crore poor across the country to deal with the economic impact of the lockdown amid coronavirus outbreak. As many of 20.5 crore women Jan Dhan Account holders will get Rs 500 per month for next three months to run their households. For poor senior citizens, widow and disabled will get an ex-gratia of Rs 1,000 . Also, the daily wage under MNREGA has been increased to Rs 202 a day from Rs 182 to benefit 5 crore workers. The minister  had said the government will front-load Rs 2,000 payment to farmers in the first week of April under the existing PM Kishan Yojana to benefit 8.69 crore farmers. Also, the beneficiaries of Ujjwala LPG scheme will get free cooking gas for the next three months, she had said.

PM hailed farmers and honest tax payers for their contribution in making the welfare scheme successful.

Earlier, Modi government had said that it would not allow anybody, especially any poor family, to suffer on account of non-availability of foodgrains.

Moreover, during his Tuesday's address to the nation, PM Modi said, "Timely lockdown, other decisions saved many lives, but since Unlock one has begun, people have shown negligence."

Also, PM asked everyone to follow health guidelines properly. He said be it head of village or prime minister, nobody is above rules.
