Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme (Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY SEHAT) for the residents of the Jammu & Kashmir on Saturday I.e. December 26, 2020 via video conferencing. Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha started the opening address of the virtual event and invited PM Modi to launch Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY SEHAT.

In the opening speech, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said recently three-tier grassroot democracy was established in J&K with DDC elections. “I thank the people of J&K for their participation in the elections. The elected DDC members will take oath on 28th December.”  

“I would like to tell that over 10 lakh farmers of Jammu and Kashmir have received financial assistance under PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme. We are ready for COVID19 vaccination. When a vaccine is available, we will be able to inoculate the identified persons: Jammu & Kashmir,” he added.

Speking during the event, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, “PM Modi wishes to see speedy development in J&K and improvement in the standard of living of people. He presses that democracy should reach the grassroots levels and wishes peace & security for people of the state.”

The Scheme provides free of cost insurance cover to all the residents of the UT of J&K. It provides financial cover upto Rs 5 lakh per family on a floater basis to all residents of the UT of J&K.  

It provides for an operational extension of PM-JAY to 15 lakh (approx) additional families. The scheme will operate on insurance mode in convergence with PM-JAY. The benefits of the scheme will be portable across the country.  

The hospitals empaneled under the PM-JAY scheme shall provide services under this scheme as well.

Earlier, informing about the virtual event PMO said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch Ayushman Bharat ‘PM-JAY SEHAT’ to extend coverage to all the residents of the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir on 26th December, via video conferencing.”    

The PM-JAY, which was launched on September 23, 2018, is the world’s largest health insurance/ assurance scheme fully financed by the Centre. It provides a cover of Rs 5 lakh per family annually for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation for public and private enlisted hospitals in the country. More than 10.74 crore poor and vulnerable entitled families are eligible for benefits.
