All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Hence, various government, non-government and private companies offer employees various leaves from work. These leaves can be taken at the time of a medical emergency. At the same time, they ensure that both the employer and employee have proper work-life balance. It helps in better health and contentment, which reflects on an employee's work efficiency. Here are the various categories of leaves that employees in India can avail:

1. Holidays

These are the holidays wherein the employee is paid and no deduction is made from the salary. These include the national holidays, festivals and the weekly holidays. The latter two depend on entirely what the company policy states.

2. Earned Leaves 

Also, termed as privileged leaves, these are leaves that employee earns after working for a specific number of days. This leave too is sanctioned without any deduction from the salary. These leaves have to be approved by the employer, except in case of emergency. 

3. Casual Leave

These are short term leaves that can be taken with prior notice to the employer. The number of days of casual leaves depends from organisation to organisation, varying roughly between 5-7 days. Here, official holidays are not counted when calculating the casual leaves taken by the employee.

4. Medical Leave

Employees can call in sick if he or she is unable to make it to the office. Employees are entitled to sick leaves only after a certain duration in the company. The number of days of casual leaves depend from organisation to organisation and a medical certificate may be required if the leave is prolonged.

5. Maternity Leave

Exclusively for women who plan to have a child, the duration of the maternity leave varies from 12-16 weeks, which can be further extended to 16 months of unpaid leave. There is no deduction from the salary of the employee. In the case of miscarriages and abortions, the leave can be availed but for a comparatively shorter period of time.

6. Half Pay Leave

Available in government offices, this kind of leave is sanctioned after 1 year of service in the office. Moreover, as the name suggests, the employee gets half of his daily wages during such a leave. 

7. Quarantine Leave

Employees get this leave only if  there is presence of an infectious disease in the family, that can be hazardous to the welfare of the other employees of the organisation.

8. Study Leave

This leave can be taken by the employee if he or she believes to take time out to update his/her knowledge and expertise over a particular subject, which can be put to the greater use of the company.

Other leaves that are granted by certain organisations are commuted leave, leave not due, paternity leave,  childcare leave, hospital leave, special disability leave, and child adoption leave. The duration and availability of these leaves is available from company to company
