Aadhaar security: If you do not want to use Aadhaar-based biometric authentication service, you can 'Lock' your biometrics in Aadhaar, on the UIDAI official website - uidai.gov.in . You can also 'Unlock' them whenever you want to use for authentication. However, for this facility, you need to add your phone number with Aadhaar for receiving login OTP.  If you wish to lock Aadhaar biometrics, you can stop authentication of your Aadhaar completely. However, to enable the lock, you should have your VID or virtual ID.

Any resident with valid Aadhaar can use the service. This feature empowers an Aadhaar holder to prevent any potential misuse of biometric authentication. After you lock your Aadhaar biometrics, if your UID is used for invoking any authentication services using a biometric modality (fingerprint or iris), a specific error code "330" indicating biometrics are locked will appear.

How to Unlock biometrics?
Once residents enable biometric locking system their biometric remains locked till the Aadhaar holders chose to unlock or disable the Locking system. For unlocking it, an Aadhaar holder has to remember VID.
Registered mobile number is essential to avail of this service. In case your mobile number is not registered with Aadhaar, visit the nearest enrolment centre or mobile update endpoint.

If one forgets VID then how to unlock UID?
After locking the unique identification number or UID, if one forgets VID, the resident can use SMS service to retrieve 16 digit VID on his/her mobile number. They have to send SMS to 1947 with Aadhaar register mobile number as RVID space last 4 or 8 digit of UID. Aadhaar card security has been one major issue last year. These features give Aadhaar card holders options when they want to use it and after that, they can lock the number from access.
