Jagtap winning the by-poll to the Chinchwad Assembly seat after the party lost its fortress Kasba Petha assembly seat to the Congress. The results of by-polls to Punes two seats - Chinchwad and Kasba Petha - were announced in Pune on Thursday, March 2, 2023. Ashwini trounced her nearest Nationalist Congress Party-Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) rival Vithal Nana Kate and Shiv Sena (UBT) rebel Rahul Kalate who contested as an Independent. Jagtap secured around 1,35,494 votes over Kates 99,424 votes and Kalates 40,075 votes. The by-election was necessitated due to the death of incumbent BJP MLA Laxman Jagtap, the husband of Ashwini Jagtap. The nearly three-decade-old BJP bastion of Kasba Peth in the heart of Pune city was breached by Congress with Ravindra Dhangekar, who was the candidate of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi, winning the elections. Dhangekar defeated Hemant Rasane of the BJP by a margin of over 11,000 votes. The BJP has won this seat since 1980 except on two occasions. The polls were necessitated because of the death of BJP MLA Mukta Tilak, the great-granddaughter-in-law of revolutionary nationalist leader Lokmanya Tilak.
