    "The outcome of five assembly polls is very encouraging. Despite defeat in Punjab, our alliance has got over 30% votes," Shah said. On BJP's strong showing in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, Shah said, "It is the biggest electoral victory in independent India."

    "I can understand her state of mind", Shah said on BSP leader's Mayawati's allegations on EVM rigging. 

    BJP Parliamentary Board to meet tomorrow evening, to be preceded by felicitation of Prime Minister Modi, Shah confirmed, the report added.

  • Punjab Assembly: Congress candidate and former Indian hockey captain Pargat Singh retained his Jalandhar Cantt seat by defeating Akali candidate Sarabjit Singh Makkar by 29,124 votes. Pargat, an Olympian, polled 59,349 votes while SAD candidate got 30,225 votes. AAP candidate Harkrishan Singh Walia got 25,912 votes, a PTI report said.

    Going by the counting of votes till noon, the party has established comfortable leads in eight of the nine seats contested by it and is locked in a neck-and-neck fight with the Samajwadi Party in another. Its ally, the Apna Dal (Soney Lal), has contested three seats and is leading in one while trailing in the rest.

    The BSP is leading in two seats. The SP-Congress alliance has a slender lead in just one seat, the report added.

    As per the counting trends, the party was not doing well in Punjab, where it was seen as an alternative to the Akalis and the Congress, and Goa, where it hoped to put up a spirited fight.
    "We are disappointed with the results. We will introspect on the reasons behind the (poor) performance," senior AAP leader Ashutosh said.

    AAP leader and Delhi minister Kapil Mishra said the party had not expected such results in Punjab and Goa.

  • In a setback to BJP, Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar was today humbled in his sitting seat Mandrem by Congress candidate Dayanand Sopte, as the ruling and opposition parties appeared locked in a close fight, going by results and trends from all the 40 segments, PTI reported.

    Parsekar lost by a margin of 7,219 votes. Of the 15 results declared so far, BJP bagged 6, Congress 4, Goa Forward 2, MGP, independent and NCP one each.

  • Proving wrong fears of a hung assembly, the BJP was set to sweep back to power in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday after 15 long years, giving Prime Minister Narendra Modi his biggest victory after the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, as reported by IANS.

    Powered by an aggressive campaign spearheaded by Modi, BJP candidates were on the road to victory in a whopping 306 of the 403 constituencies as officials counted the millions of votes polled in the staggered election.   • UP Assembly: Trends show BJP's Sangeet Singh Som is ahead of his nearest SP rival Atul Pradhan by a margin of 8,359 votes in Sardhana seat. 

  • BJP leaders today credited 'Modi wave' for the party's stong showing in the high stakes Uttar Pradesh elections, PTI reported.

    On the next chief minister in the state, they said the decision will be taken by the BJP parliamentary board and the legislature party in the state soon.

  • Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh of the Congress party won in Thoubal constituency, defeating rights activist Irom Sharmila, who got fewer than 100 votes, as reported by IANS. 

    The three-time Chief Minister, who had established an insurmountable lead over Sharmila of the PRJA party, won comfortably with over 15,000 votes. Leitanthem Basanta Singh of BJP came second in the votes.

  • The opposition BJP is leading in 44 seats in the 70-member Uttarakhand Assembly. As per the latest trends available for 57 seats, the BJP has taken the lead in 44, the ruling Congress is ahead in 10 and Independents in three, state election office here said. 

  • Goa Assembly: MGP's Dipak Pawaskar defeats Ganesh Gaonkar of BJP by 1,169 votes in Sanvordem constituency. 

  • Punjab Assembly: The opposition Congress was surging ahead in 50 seats in the 117-member Punjab Assembly, followed by the SAD-BJP in 28 and AAP in 22 seats, as per early trends.
