G20 Summit 2023 LIVE Updates: India began a summit of leaders from the Group of 20 (G20) major economies at the Bharat Mandapam convention centre in Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, on September 9, where delegates are expected to discuss, and try to find answers to, some of the world's pressing problems. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in an address to the world leaders ahead of the first session of the summit, said the Ukraine war has deepened the trust deficit globally as he appealed to the entire world to turn it into confidence in each other. In his opening remarks, PM Modi said the 21st century is a time of giving a new direction to the world.
PM Modi announced that the bloc was granting permanent membership to the African Union in an effort to make it more representative. The Prime Minister said that the idea of "sabka saath, sabka vikas, sabka vishwas, sabka prayas" (meaning "everyone's support, everyone's development, everyone's faith, everyone's effort") can guide the world.
The onset of the annual meeting of the all-powerful G20 bloc comes amid a string of preparations including strict traffic restrictions and tight security arrangements. PM Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with leaders from Germany, Britain, Japan, and Italy on the first day of the two-day mega event. On the eve of the first day of the G20 Summit, PM Modi held bilateral talks with US President Joe Biden covering a wide range of issues focused on deepening the bond between the two countries.

G20 aides agree on Ukraine war phrasing as leaders begin summit
Delegates from the world's most powerful countries have reached a compromise on language to describe the war in Ukraine, news agency Reuters reported citing a source with knowledge of the discussions.
"Today, as the president of G20, India calls upon the entire world to first convert this global trust deficit into one trust and one confidence," PM Modi said in his opening remarks at the Bharat Mandapam convention centre. "It is time for all of us to move together."

The Group of Twenty, or G20, was founded in 1999 following the financial crisis of 1997-98. It was then an informal forum for the finance ministers and central bank chiefs of the most important industrialised and developing economies to discuss issues related to the global economy and finance. Only Treasury chiefs met as part of the G20 grouping in the initial years. However, heads of all member nations decided later on to meet once a year for a leaders' summit after the global financial crisis of 2008.
