The third stage of GRAP measures came into force in the national capital on Thursday, restricting non-essential construction work, stone crushing and mining activities in the Delhi NCR. Restrictions were also imposed on the plying of BS III petrol and BS IV diesel four-wheelers in Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad and Gautam Budh Nagar.

The air quality in New Delhi has turned from bad to worse over the past few days, leading to a dense haze engulfing the city and its surrounding areas. The weather office has warned that the level of PM2.5, a fine particulate matter capable of penetrating deep into the respiratory system and causing health problems, has exceeded the safe limit of 60 micrograms per cubic metre by seven to eight times at multiple locations across the region. Meanwhile, health experts at both government and private hospitals have cautioned people against venturing out early morning for walks or other forms of exercise, and urged them to wear masks when stepping out for essential tasks.
