NEET, JEE, CUET Merger: The University Grants Commission (UGC) is working on combining the entrance exams for engineering and medicine into Common University Entrance Test (CUET-UG). A proposal to incorporate the NEET and JEE tests into the CUET has also been sent by the commission.

To take forward the proposal, the UGC will assemble a committee and consult with various stakeholders. The proposal states that students can choose from a variety of subjects of study but only take the test once.

For now, the students must take the NEET and JEE exams in order to get admitted to medical and engineering colleges, and the CUET exam in order to be admitted to degree programmes in the arts, sciences, and business.

How the merge will benefit students?

This proposal will bring ease to students. Students will only have to appear for one examination (CUET). The marks scored in CUET will be used by students to get admission in multiple disciplines.

With the marks scored in CUTE, students can get admission into Medical, Engineering, Mathematics, Arts, Business Administration, and whatnot. This will solve the problem of overlapping in major national-level admission tests.

Students will not be required to manage dates, exam centers and more logistics problems.

What is CUET?

The CUET was introduced by University Grants Commission earlier this year for admission to various Central universities and colleges.

This year, CUET has received 14.9 lakh registrations. 53 Central Universities 12 state universities, 11 deemed universities, and 19 private universities are part of the first edition of CUET-UG for admissions for the 2022-23 session.

The exam is conducted in a computer-based mode for two hours.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) is conducting test in 13 languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali, and Hindi. Admission to undergraduate courses at Central Universities will be exclusively dependent on CUET 2022 results, with no weighting given to class 12th results.
