This decision was undertaken by the Punjab Chief Minister during a virtual COVID-19 review meeting with top officials and medical experts as per an ANI report. Earlier, Captain Amarinder Singh had also urged the Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal to postpone the board exams for classes 10 and 12 in view of the COVID-19 situation in the country. The Punjab Chief Minister in a letter wrote to Pokhriyal, "it would only be appropriate that a decision is taken forthwith to postpone the class 10 class 12 board examinations."

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had finally cancelled CBSE class 10 board exams. The class 12 board exams have been postponed as of now. A decision regarding the revised dates for the CBSE class 12 board exams will be taken after a detailed review of the COVID-19 situation of the country on June 1, 2021.

Coming back to the evaluation for the students of these classes in Punjab, for class 5, the exams for four out of five subjects have already been conducted. In that case, the Punjab State Education Board (PSEB) will declare the results on the basis of these four subjects, ignoring the fifth subject. The CM has also directed that as for class 8 and class 10, the results can be declared on the basis of pre-board exams or internal assessments of the respective schools.

The decision regarding the class 12 board exams which have already been postponed will be taken later depending on the situation.

The state has closed down all educational institutions till April 30, 2021, in view of the surge in the number of coronavirus cases in the state.
