The National Board of Examinations (NBE) told the Supreme Court that around 2.09 lakh candidates have registered for the NEET-PG exam 2023 and no alternative date for conducting the exam may be available in the near future if it is postponed.

The submissions were made before the bench of justices S R Bhat and Dipankar Datta. The apex court asked Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for the NBE, to come out with a solution of the issue raised by the petitioners.

The bench also observed that "For those who are waiting for this (examination), it is really a mental torture."

"When we postpone a judicial exam, there is agony for the candidates who are preparing for it. The whole dynamics change," it added.

About The Case

A petition on behalf of aspirants has been filed in the apex court seeking to postpone the date of the NEET PG exam for at least 2 to 3 months in order to shorten the time between NEET PG 2023 and the counselling date.

According to NEET PG aspirants, if the entrance exam is held on the scheduled date and the counselling is conducted in August, then neither they will be able to apply for jobs due to the short gap, nor they will be able to properly utilise that time for studying and preparations. If the exam is postponed, aspirants will get more time to study and get better results.
