As per a report by ANI, the decision was announced by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha at a high-level meeting chaired by him while reviewing the COVID-19 situation in the union territory. In fact, last week various other states and union territories have also instructed the schools and other educational institutions to remain closed amidst this COVID-19 situation in the country.

Amidst this situation, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has cancelled the class 10 board exams and postponed the class 12 board exams starting from May 4, 2021. Several states, for instance Punjab, decided to promote the students to the next class without any exams. In Punjab, the state government decided that the students of classes 5, 8 and 11 will be promoted to the next classes without any exams.

Coming back to Jammu and Kashmir, following a detailed discussion about the COVID-19 situation, the decision to keep the schools and other educational institutions closed in the union territory was undertaken. However, the courses that require physical presence of students due to laboratory/research/thesis works and internship, have been exempted from this order.

When the pandemic first struck the country a year ago, the schools and other educational institutions were closed down and the students had to depend on the digital platform. At present, with the number of COVID-19 cases increasing day by day, the schools and other educational institutions will yet again move to the digital platform for imparting education.

Due to the spike in the number of coronavirus cases, the Lieutenant Governor has instructed for stricter measures to contain the spread of the disease. Now, all passengers and travellers coming to Jammu and Kashmir must undergo a COVID-19 antigen test through any of the methods as prescribed by the Jammu and Kashmir government.
