1. Read, Analyse and Interpret the Questions

Often some students, in a rush and out of nervousness, fail to understand the question and despite knowing the correct answer end up writing a wrong answer. Always read the question carefully and meticulously. It is important for students to analyse what is being asked, look for instruction words and try and interpret the meaning of the question accurately and clearly before beginning to write the answer.

2. Present the answer well

Even after knowing the answer well, students are unable to communicate it to the examiner properly. Students should refrain from writing long and lengthy answers and be brief. Writing answers strategically and keeping it to the point by including only the required information is the key. Students can highlight the important keywords to attract the attention of the examiner. Wherever asked, they should draw the diagrams and label it well. Making use of flowcharts or writing the answer in form of brief points can make the answer very presentable.

3. Use simple and easy to follow language

Students should always answer in a simple language that is easily comprehendible by the reader. They should abstain from using flamboyant language or difficult terminologies. They should not use contractions or slang language. There should be fluency and coherence in the answers and the examiner should feel connected with whatever iswritten. In short, the answers should make sense.

4. Manage your time

It is rightly said, “Time and tide wait for none”, so students should buckle up. Managing time right from the beginning of the exam is important so that students don’t have to rush towards the end. They should allocate time to the questions according to the marks they carry. Also, making use of the fifteen minutes of reading time that is given before the start of the exam can do wonders. Students should read the question paper thoroughly, pay attention the instructions given, decide which questions or section they want to tackle first, mark the questions they know well, circle which they don’t, underline the keywords in the questions etc. in advance so that they can strategically go about the exam paper.

5. Adhere to the word limit

Board examinations, in particular, follow a word-limit and students should pay heed to that. Answers should be compact, concise and within the prescribed word limit. If a student feels the answer will not suffice in the given word limit, it can be broken down into points.

6. Save time for revision

Revision is very important. It ensures that a student has answered all the questions, labelled the diagrams, attached the graphs/maps, etc. A quick go through can help make the grade by saving them from any unforeseen errors they might have committed or any important information they might have missed. Hence, students should always revise the answer sheets before handing the same to the invigilator.

7. Stay calm, stay confident

Last but not the least, students should stay calm and compose. Getting jitters on the day of the exam or during it is completely normal. They should not panic! If they feel tense or nervous, taking deep breaths, indulging in positive self-talk, drinking some water or taking a break will help. All they need to do is be confident of their preparation and have faith in their abilities that “I can and I will” because “we believe you can and you will”.
