He has said he is willing to return to India to answer all questions but he has to be assured of his safety and freedom," said Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw , independent board member to ET.

Mallya said this during the board meeting of United Breweries Ltd (UBL) which he chaired via video-conferencing.

The board meeting was held in Mumbai on Friday, with Mallya logging on remotely from London.

ET quoted another independent board member  CY Pal as saying, "We all unanimously expressed our concerns to Mr Mallya and he told us that he is making serious efforts to repay the banks."

Mallya has told the board of UBL that there is evidence to justify the allegations of money laundering against him and he was willing to return if he was assured of safe passage.
