The Rajya Sabha Ethics Committee had given Mallya a week's time to respond why his membership shouldn't be cancelled.

Sources said that the Ethics Committee received the resignation letter from Mallya on Monday.

The Committee has organised a meeting on Tuesday to take stock of the letter and is likely to revoke his Rajya Sabha membership. The chairman of the committee will take the final decision after the meeting.

Mallya is an independent member of the House from Karnataka and is under the scanner of Enforcement Directorate for defaulting bank loans of over Rs 9,000 crore.

Last week, the Ministry of External Affairs revoked Mallya's passport and asked United Kingdom for his deportation.
